Purpose: To get your pitchers, catchers and infielders reacting better to the bunt,
and working together as a unit to prevent the offense from gaining an advantage.
Emphasize strong communication, proper foot-work, and decisive actions.
Procedure: You'll need at least a full infield squad to perform this drill. You can also
have your position players take turns performing the drill during each repetition.
Here's the sequence:
1) All players start from their normal positions. Since it's a bunt situation, your
corner infielders should be playing in (at least even with the bag).
2) On signal from the coach, the pitcher delivers a ball to the catcher at home plate.
All of the infielders yell "BUNT, BUNT, BUNT!" to set the team in motion.
3) The corner infielders and the pitcher break hard towards home plate to cover the
bunt. The short-stop breaks hard to cover third base (or second-base, depending
on the situation, as the coach may direct) and the second baseman breaks hard to
cover first base.
4) The catcher simulates a bunt by quickly tossing the ball down one of the base
lines (vary both location and distance of the "bunted" ball).
5) As the appropriate fielder fields the ball, the catcher loudly and forcefully directs
the fielder to throw to a base ("ONE, ONE, ONE!" or "THREE, THREE, THREE!").
6) The fielder then reacts to the catcher's direction, turns and makes a strong,
accurate throw to the indicated base.
Note: Of course, you can run this drill with simulated runners to make it more fun,
and to give the fielders a feel for how quickly they need to react. Having live runners
also gives the catcher some practice watching the runners and making the quick
decision.
