Coach's Corner

Play Ball!!!
Ok, it's the off season so we can't really play ball. That doesn't mean
we can't prepare for the next season. Now is a perfect time to plan. There
is no pressure to perform and the emotions of last year have subsided so
we can objectively review our last season. Here are some ideas to help
plan ahead.
* Make a list of the things you did well and HOW you did it so you
can do it again in the future.
* Make a list of the things you did NOT do well in order to make a
plan to improve.
Your improvement plan can include the following:
* Talking or networking with other coaches who are having success
with the things you aren't.
* Surf the web for coaching tips and reference websites.
* Plan on attending clinics and workshops. Find them now so you
can schedule well in advance. (Even attend PLAYERS camps to see
what is being taught!)
* Borrow, rent or buy instructional videos and/or books to review
`at your leisure during the winter. I have some pretty cool stuff if you want
`somewhere to start.
Time flies! Start soon so that you won't get caught short of time when the next
season approaches. Our goal for our players is that they get better each year.
That's a pretty good goal for US to have for ourselves as well.
Yours in Baseball,
Coach Bartlett

Off Season Planning
Note from the editor: I am leaving this article up even though it was written for
the holidays - I think it is great info for anytime of the year! Thanks Steve!
I don’t know about your house, but at mine, the request for baseball
stuff is at the top the Christmas Wish List! My guy wants baseball clothes,
shoes, a bat, glove and other accessories…so far.
This Santa feels that getting the glove is the best bet at this time of
year if you must make a choice. Why? The glove should still be the
one thing guaranteed to fit come spring. You don’t know what growth
spurts may or may not happen in the next few months. The glove is bought to
fit the position as much as the player. Just because your player is
getting bigger doesn't mean his/her glove should. Investing in a better
quality glove is the decision to be made. Infielders should have a smaller
glove to have a better feel for the ball and that makes it easier to get the
ball out and develop “quick hands”. Outfielders can go larger,
but make sure they still can have a feel for the ball.
The website www.baseballgloves.com is a good resource to use when
deciding what to get. There are other sites too just a Google search away. I
typed in “breaking in a baseball glove” and found a bunch of them.
FYI…Our indoor batting cage facility is coming along nicely and
should be operational soon. Keep an eye on the BLL website for further details.
From now on, I’ll be ending each column with a quote for coaches.
Here’s the first:
“Baseball gives every American boy a chance to excel, not just to be
as good as someone else but to be better than someone else. This is the
nature of man, and the name of the game.” Ted Williams
It was difficult to place all the great information provided
here - it can't all be first - make sure you check it all out!
If the glove fits...
