Burlington Little League History

The Burlington Little League began in May 1958.  Roy McConnell, Dr. Lief
Erickson, and Dr. Laird McNeel were the original founders. 40 boys showed up
for the first sign up. First managers were Roy McConnell, Don Gianninni & Bob
Grossman.

In May, 1959 - Roy McConnell requested the assistance of the Lions Club. Try
outs were held and over 150 boys turned out. Six sponsors were secured and
the teams were sanctioned. The teams were divided into two leagues. The
Ginger Beaumont & Frank Roth.

Ginger Beaumont, born in Rochester and later a resident of Honey Creek
and Burlington, was the first man ever to come to the plate in the world
series. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His daughter was a resident of
Burlington, Mrs. Janet (Enoch) Squires.

Frank Roth was a Burlington resident for 40 years of his life and he played,
coached & scouted professional baseball for more than 31 years. He joined
the White Sox in 1906 & helped them to win 2 pennants. In 1909 he went to
Cincinatti for 3 years. He then went to the Yankees & became its first pitching       
coach.

The 1959 Season schedule started June 11th and ended August 11th.  Four
diamonds were used:  Waller West, Waller East, Athletic Field and Burlington
High School.

The league consisted of 8 teams. Four in the Frank Roth and four in the Ginger
Beaumont. Teams names:
1. Battery Service
2. Dons Cheese
3. Quality Tankers
4. Montgomery Wards
5. Go Go Boys
6. Midland Mites
7. Whiz Kids
8. Reinemans

The first game was played June 11th 1959 at Waller School. Mayor Robert Beix
threw out the first game ball to catcher Bill Bohlwan. Bill played with the Stag
Shop.

The 1960 Montgomery Wards team is the first team to go undefeated and it then
beat the Little Tankers in the first recognized city championship game. The
Montgomery Ward team consisted of  Tom and Jerry Muench,Ed Ludwig, Mike
Kelly,  Jerry Reavis,  Jim Douglas,  Don Rubach, Tom Grossman,  Steve
Seekers,  Rich Bucholtz,  Steve LaBelle, Doug Rubach and Phil Stardy. Forrest
Bucholtz was the manager of the Montgomery Wards team.

The first Burlington Little League fund raiser was in 1960. Sponsored by the
Dairy Queen. Tickets for Ice Cream Sundaes were sold.

In 1961 Russ Wegge was the President for Ginger Beaumont and Carl Rubach
was the President for Frank Roth.  Jeff Snyder was the President of the Minor
League.

On July 13, 1961 Jim Kerkman, Reinemans, pitched a perfect game.  He faced
18 batter and 18 strike outs.  Reinemans won 8-0 against Korky's.

The Minor League was comprised of 6 teams and 90 players.

In 1963 Wenzel (Bud) Tauscher was President of the Frank Roth Division. Jeff
Snyder was President of the Ginger Beaumont Division.
 
In 1964 Midland Mites beat Sentry for the City Championship

Some of the old rules: Players could be released for any reason by the manager.
No girls can play on a little league team. All personnel must be above
"reproach". No coach or Manager can be in the coaching box. No Tobacco of any
form is allowed. Only 2 twelve year olds may pitch in a week and no more than 6
innings for each pitcher.

In 1965 and 1966 The Texaco Stars took back to back City Championships

In 1967 the PTR's (J.W. Peters Team) defeated the Texaco Stars for the City
Championship

In 1968 Little league tryouts are held for the more than 350 registrered players.

In 1969 John Seymore was President of the Ginger Beaumont Division and
Ronald Schiller was President for Frank Roth.
The Texaco Stars were the first undefeated team in 1969 with a record of 15-0

Nestle Morsels defeat the Whiz Kids for the City Championship in 1971

In 1973 Bill Branen donated the money to have two dugouts - 23 feet long at
Branen Field

In 1974 Jim Spiegelhoff is the President of both Frank Roth and Ginger
Beaumont leagues.
Sharon Mamath and Tammy Woodruff (commented to be 2 of the better
tryouts for little league) were not allowed to play because the rules stated it
was only for boys.  There are court cases pending "in the East" to change
this rule.  After years in the courts, the national little league were ordered to            
allow girls to play and Sharon and Tammy became the first girls to play for             
Burlington Little League.
