The Burlington Little League began in May 1958.  Roy McConnell, Dr. Lief
Erickson, and Dr. Laird McNeel were the original founders. 40 boys showed up
for the first sign up. First managers were Roy McConnell, Don Gianninni & Bob
Grossman.

In May, 1959 - Roy McConnell requested the assistance of the Lions Club. Try
outs were held and over 150 boys turned out. Six sponsors were secured and
the teams were sanctioned. The teams were divided into two leagues. The
Ginger Beaumont & Frank Roth.

Ginger Beaumont, born in Rochester and later a resident of Honey Creek
and Burlington, was the first man ever to come to the plate in the world
series. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His daughter was a resident of
Burlington, Mrs. Janet (Enoch) Squires.

Cincinatti for 3 years. He then went to the Yankees & became its first pitching
coach.

Montgomery Ward team consisted of  Tom and Jerry Muench,Ed Ludwig, Mike
Kelly,  Jerry Reavis,  Jim Douglas,  Don Rubach, Tom Grossman,  Steve
Seekers,  Rich Bucholtz,  Steve LaBelle, Doug Rubach and Phil Stardy. Forrest

In 1963 Wenzel (Bud) Tauscher was President of the Frank Roth Division. Jeff
Snyder was President of the Ginger Beaumont Division.

In 1964 Midland Mites beat Sentry for the City Championship

Some of the old rules: Players could be released for any reason by the manager.
No girls can play on a little league team. All personnel must be above
"reproach". No coach or Manager can be in the coaching box. No Tobacco of any
form is allowed. Only 2 twelve year olds may pitch in a week and no more than 6
innings for each pitcher.

In 1965 and 1966 The Texaco Stars took back to back City Championships

In 1967 the PTR's (J.W. Peters Team) defeated the Texaco Stars for the City
Championship

In 1968 Little league tryouts are held for the more than 350 registrered players.

In 1969 John Seymore was President of the Ginger Beaumont Division and
Ronald Schiller was President for Frank Roth.
The Texaco Stars were the first undefeated team in 1969 with a record of 15-0

Nestle Morsels defeat the Whiz Kids for the City Championship in 1971

In 1973 Bill Branen donated the money to have two dugouts - 23 feet long at
Branen Field

In 1974 Jim Spiegelhoff is the President of both Frank Roth and Ginger
Beaumont leagues.
Sharon Mamath and Tammy Woodruff (commented to be 2 of the better
tryouts for little league) were not allowed to play because the rules stated it
was only for boys.  There are court cases pending "in the East" to change
this rule.  After years in the courts, the national little league were ordered to
allow girls to play and Sharon and Tammy became the first girls to play for
Burlington Little League.

Players pictures and names can be found in the June 25, 1975 issue of the
paper.

Burlington Little League 50th Season Celebration a Great Success
Everyone who attended the 50th Season
celebration on Saturday, July 25th
experienced history remembered and made.
The weather was perfect and everyone had a
great time in a very festive setting.
Once again, as it has been for the last 50
years, the Burlington community came
together to support a great season of youth
baseball and celebrate the numerous
volunteers who made the Burlington Little
League program what it is today.

It started as a comment between friends, and
with some initiative, in 1958 Roy McConnell,
Dr. Lief Erickson, Sr. and Dr Laird McNeel
founded what would become the Burlington
Little League one year later when Roy
McConnell requested the assistance of the
Lions Club. They sanctioned two leagues
with Little League, Inc and found 6 sponsors
for the 150+ boys that registered that year.

The two leagues would be named after
baseball legends from the Burlington area;
Frank Roth and Ginger Beaumont. Frank
Roth was a Burlington resident for 40 years,
he joined the White Sox in 1906 and helped
them win 2 pennants, in 1909 he went to
Cincinnati for 3 years, he then went to the
Yankees to become their first pitching coach.
Ginger Beaumont was  born in Rochester
and later lived in Honey Creek and
Burlington. He was the first man ever to
come to the plate in the World Series. He
played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dr. Lief Erickson Sr and his wife, Betty,
attended the 50th Anniversary Celebration
and Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  Dr
Erickson was reminiscent of how the
program was started, remembering Roy
McConnell and Dr. Laird McNeel, wishing
they could see what he saw,  and in awe of
what it has become. “This is incredible, what
a fantastic program” Dr. Erickson said as he
watched the 12 year old All Stars play. He
threw out the first pitch for the game, the
players surrounded him, shaking his hand
and thanking him. “Burlington Little League
is a nonprofit organization, founded and
preserved by volunteers, emulating a sense
of community spirit in everyone touched by
the program. “It was an amazing piece of
history unfolding when the players
surrounded Dr. Erickson, waiting to shake
his hand. It was a proud moment I will never
forget.” said current President, Kelley
Albrecht.

Our appreciation goes out to all the sponsors
who donated funding as well as time,
materials, and talent.
Our thanks to Jay Poissant, a Burlington Little
League parent; he sang a beautiful rendition
of the Star Spangled Banner before the final
games of the season.

Also, thanks to all who helped organize the
event and to all our former board members
and families who attended.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the Lions
Club for running the program for 30 years
and supporting it throughout the years. Were
it not for the forsight of these individuals:
Russ Wegge, Forrest Droster, Roy
McConnell, William Branen, Murray Dow,
Willard Agnew, Elmer Bauman and Vern
Wolf, we would not have the great program in
such a beautiful setting that we enjoy today.

There are countless volunteers who have
contributed to the success of the program, to
name a few; Bill Branen, Rollie Bauman,
William Ebbers, Glen Hintz, Joe Schiestle,
past Presidents: Gary Caliva, Bill
Schellpfeffer, Dr. Mike Anderson, Linda
Auseth, Kevin McKillip and Scott Behnke,
there are many more volunteers that gave
their time and talents, you can read the BLL
history documented over the years by Rollie
Bauman on the website: www.bllbaseball.
com.

The Burlington Little League Board would
like to thank all the sponsors, managers,
coaches, volunteers and parents for coming
together and giving their time to make this
season a memorable experience for the
players, and everyone involved, you are
appreciated.
Dr. Erickson, Sr explains how it all began
photo compliments of Kathy Lindemann
Rollie Bauman throws out the first pitch
photo compliments of Kathy Lindemann
Rollie Bauman and his wife,Betty, also attend the
celebration. Rollie is a Hall of Fame member and a
lifetime member of the Board of Directors as well
as the league historian. He has given so much to
the little league over the last 50 years, including
raising funds needed to build the practice pavilion
that was dedicated in his honor last year. Rollie
threw out the first pitch at the 11 year old All Star
game at the year end celebration. “If it weren’t for
Rollie keeping the history over the years we would
have nothing to pass along to the children, it is
important for them to know where all this came
from, the sacrifices and initiative it took to make it
what it has become gives an amazing sense of
community. After Rollie threw out the first pitch, the
children surrounded him as he spoke to them, it
was a true picture of what this is all about.” said
Albrecht.
Richard Taylor was inducted into the Hall of Fame,
giving his time a talent over the last 50 years, it
was most appropriate that he became a Hall of
Fame Member on our 50th Anniversary. He is a
retired Kenosha teacher, his wife Carole Steinke,
is also a retired Burlington teacher. Dick began
volunteering for the little league in 1959, a
sophomore in High School, as an assistant coach
for the Montgomery Wards, his brother’s team,
managed by Forrest Bucholtz. That same year Dick
was a member of the BHS baseball team, and
they won the 1959 Southern Lakes Conference. In
1982 Dick was an assistant coach for his sons T
Ball team and the following year he managed the
Dairy Queen sponsored team. In 1984 he
managed a Minor league team and in 1985 he
managed the Majors Foster Forbes team. “The
President was Bill Schellpfeffer”  Dick reminisces.
When Foster Forbes withdrew from sponsoring
the team, the Spiegelhoffs Pick N Save took over.
Dick retired from managing in 2006 to umpire and
he continues to serve on the board as Vice
President, Umpire in Chief, Tournament Director
and Field and Grounds Director. He is an
immeasurable asset to the program.

Burlington Ginger Beaumont just completed its trip to 10/11 Year Old Little League State Tourney
in Verona.

To make it to state, Burlington had to win its District 6 Tourney in Greenfield.  That included
teams from Oak Creek, Franklin, South Milwaukee, Greenfield, Kenosha, and Lakeland Little
Leagues.  Burlington went 4-1 at District.  Winning against Franklin American (10-2), Kenosha
National (22-4), and Lakeland (6-3).  They advanced to Championship round where they had to
play Kenosha National again.  As a double elimination format, Kenosha had to beat them twice
to do it.  Kenosha beat them the first game (8-4), but Burlington regrouped in the final game and
won (10-2) to advance to the State Tourney in Verona.

The 10/11 Little League State Tourney was played in Verona on August 1 and concluded on
August 8.  There are six Little League Districts in the state.  The format for the tourney is to play
each district team in a pool play format.  After the five games, the top (4) seeded teams play a
semi-final and winners play the championship.  Burlington finished 4-1 and tied with
Germantown.  Burlington received the 2nd seed as a result of their head to head loss with
Germantown.  However they came up short losing to Appleton (4-3) in the semi-finals.  Appleton
beat Verona in Championship (8-3) to win 10/11 Year old State Championship.  Below are
recaps of the games at State.

Burlington 5 Antigo 4
Burlington held off a scrappy Antigo team, winning 5-4.  Pacing the offense were Jake Webley,
Jacob Lindemann, Tyler Wiemer, and Houston Cowan.  They all had singles and an RBI.  Derek
Morrow had a double.
Kross Krueger pitched great. Going 5 innings w/ 10 K’s allowing only 4 runs.  Jacob Lindemann
pitched a scoreless 6th to pick up the save.  Great defensive plays were made by shortstop Eric
Behnke and rightfielder Louie Hardesty to put down potential Antigo rally’s.

Germantown 6  Burlington 3
Burlington fell short losing to Germantown 6-3.  Trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning, Burlington rallied
for 3 runs in the bottom of the inning before stranding the potential the lead runs on base.
Offensive attack was led by Tanner Strommen, (2-3) 2 singles, Jake Webley (1-2), double 2 rbi’
s.  Tyler Wiemer and Anthony Silverman had key hits and got on base each time they were up.
Cal SanFellipo pitched 4 strong innings, allowing only 4 runs while striking out 7.  Jake Webley
and Lucas Lefebvre also pitched for Burlington.  Houston Cowan played catcher extremely well
throwing out two baserunners attempting to steal.

Burlington 7  Eau Claire-Lowes Creek 3
This game was the most exciting game of the tournament.  It was a pitchers battle that wasn’t
decided until extra innings.  It was 1-1 going in to bottom of the 6th inning.  Eau Claire proceeded
to load the bases with one out before Jacob Lindemann shut them down to force an extra frame.
In the top of the 7th, Burlington had first and third w/ 2 outs when the flood gates finally opened.
Eric Behnke had a base hit to score the lead run.  Ben Heiligenthal, Jacob Lindemann, Tyler
Wiemer followed with singles and it was capped off with a 2 run triple by Houston Cowan.
Hitting stars for Burlington were Eric Behnke (2-4 single, double), Houston Cowan (2-4 single,
triple 3rbi’s), Tyler Wiemer (single, 2 walks), and Anthony Silverman (2-2, 2 singles)

Houston Cowan pitched very well for Burlington.  He pitched Six innings, allowing 1 run while
striking out 4.  Jacob Weidert had a great day catching behind the plate.  He had a lot of nice
plays to save past balls and prevent runners from advancing.  Ben Heiligenthal also had some
good plays at first base to keep the game close throughout.  Jacob Lindemann closed out the
game by pitching 1 inning allowing 2 runs to earn the win.

Burlington  16   Appleton  6
Burlington fell behind 6-3 after 2 innings, but proceeded to score 13 runs over the next two
innings to down Appleton 16-6 in four innings. The 3rd inning rally was keyed by Lucas Lefebvre’
s towering homerun to right center.  Leading the hitting attack for Burlington was Tyler Wiemer (3-
4, 3 singles), Eric Behnke (3-3, 3 singles, walk), Lucas Lefebvre (1-2, HR)
Eric Behnke and Jake Webley pitched for Burlington.  Webley did not give up a hit in his two
innings of work to earn the win.

Burlington  10          Verona   4
Burlington rounded out pool play with a 10-4 victory over host Verona.  Leading the offensive
attack for Burlington was Tanner Strommen, (4-4, 4 singles), Ben Heiligenthal (3-4, 2 singles,
double), Cal Sanfelippo (1-1, single), and Houston Cowan, (2-4, 2 singles.)
Burlington pitched numerous pitchers in this game. Cal Sanfelippo started and pitched very
well.  Tanner Strommen picked up the win.  Going 2 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs.  Also pitching
for Burlington was Jacob Lindemann, Kross Krueger, and Jacob Webley.

Appleton 4   Burlington  3
Burlington ended up playing Appleton in the semi-final round.  Burlington came up short in the
rematch, falling 4-3.  Trailing 4-2 in the top of the 6th inning.  Tyler Wiemer started a rally with a
lead-off single.  Kross Krueger and Houston Cowan followed with singles to make it a one run
game.  Burlington was now trailing 4-3, with runners at first and second.  That is where the
Burlington baserunners stayed as the Appleton pitchers closed it out for their win.  Hitting stars
for Burlington were Houston Cowan and Kross Krueger both (2-2, 2 singles) and Louie Hardesty
(1-2, single and rbi).
Pitching for Burlington was Cal Sanfelippo(4 innings, 3 k’s, 2 earned runs) and Kross Krueger (1
inning).
